How it used to be

For decades, the path from university to career was reasonably predictable. You studied a subject, it pointed toward a set of professions, and employers hired graduates on potential rather than proven output. Training programmes were common. Companies invested in bringing people up to speed over months or even years. A law degree led to law. An accounting degree led to accounting. The link between what you studied and what you did for a living was strong, visible, and broadly reliable. Most graduates could afford to be patient.

How it is now

AI has compressed the entry-level pipeline in ways that would have been unthinkable five years ago. Tasks that used to justify hiring a junior - data entry, basic research, first-draft writing, scheduling, simple analysis - are now done faster and cheaper by software. Some employers have stopped hiring for those roles entirely. Others still hire, but expect far more from day one. Talk to people who are five to ten years ahead of you in fields that interest you.
